Many people are surprised to learn that pigs can become capable of reproducing while they are still very young.
However, being capable of breeding is not the same as being mature enough to breed responsibly.
Young pigs continue developing long after they reach sexual maturity. Their bones, muscles, body condition, and overall frame are still growing.
If a young sow becomes pregnant before she has fully matured, much of her body’s energy is redirected toward growing and supporting her litter instead of completing her own physical development.

As a general guideline, we do not begin breeding our future sows or boars until they are approximately four years old and have reached full physical maturity.
Waiting allows our breeding animals to:

- Complete skeletal development
- Build proper muscle condition
- Develop calm, stable temperaments
- Receive continued veterinary evaluations
- Demonstrate excellent overall health before joining our breeding program
Allowing pigs to mature first creates healthier breeding animals and healthier piglets.
Responsible Breeding Means Giving Moms Time to Recover
Ethical breeding does not stop once babies are born.
Pregnancy, farrowing, and nursing require tremendous energy. A sow’s body works incredibly hard to grow healthy piglets and provide nourishment after birth.
Breeding a sow again too soon may contribute to:

For this reason, we generally allow our sows approximately 12 to 18 months between litters whenever possible.
